ISNA Appeals for Prayers and Support for Relief Efforts: Superstorm Sandy

October 31, 2012

Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by Hurricane Sandy. While the worst of the weather is behind us, the toll of its devastation is staggering.

Superstorm Sandy brought a dangerous mix of high winds and precipitation all along the East Coast and into the Mid-Atlantic states. As of yesterday, more than 8.2 million households were without power in 17 states, as far west as Michigan. Almost 2 million of those were in New York City alone. The effects of Superstorm Sandy disabled commerce, canceling 14,000 flights and shutting down mass transit, schools, and financial markets.

The US is counting the cost of the ‘unthinkable’ devastation wrought by Superstorm Sandy. Fox News reports 57 people are dead as of Wednesday afternoon, and IHS Global Insight estimates the financial impact to be between $30 and $50 billion. “This was a devastating storm, perhaps the worst ever we have experienced”, said New York City’s Mayor Bloomberg.

President Obama has declared states of emergency for at least five states including New York and New Jersey as well as the nation’s capital.

ISNA applauds the rapid response efforts of FEMA, local/regional disaster teams and our fellow Americans in mobilizing task forces and setting up emergency shelters. We pay special tribute to the work of Muslim Relief Organizations who are increasingly involved in coordinating resources to assist in recovering from domestic disasters. ISNA encourages the Muslim community to pray for the families of the deceased, those who were injured or sustained damage and to extend a helping hand in the effort to rebuild. We urge those who are able to donate to help relieve the suffering of those affected. We encourage you to stay informed and visit these sites to donate and learn how you can help:
